RMGA presents 2016 gifts to Texas Tech golf programs
$35,000 split between men's, women's teams Troon's annual Christmas event Friday, Dec. 16, celebrated another great year for the Rawls Course at Texas Tech and the Rawls Men's Golf Assocation. The RMGA made its annual gift presentation to the Tech men's and women's golf programs, a second straight annual award of $35,000 split between the two teams.
RMGA President Jeff Deitiker and Treasurer Rich Eberhardt were on hand to present the gifts to head coaches Greg Sands and JoJo Robertson. Deitiker noted that the gifts brought the RMGA's total awards to the teams to more than $175,000 over the years, in large part from the success of the group's great annual Jerry Rawls Classic sponsored by the Reagor-Dykes Auto Group each of the past five years. Also presented was the award to the annual winner of the Robert Sharpe Memorial Tournament, this year to Jerry Smith. Jerry received the first place award, a half-year's membership to the Rawls Course. Other awards were to Ford Canale, $250 gift certificate for second place; Frank Morrison, $150, third; Mark Hayden, $100, fourth; and Dale Hayden, $100, fifth. AT RIGHT, Jerry Smith, winner of this year's Robert Sharpe Memorial, is shown with Anthony Pagliari, Rawls pro. |

RMGA donates $35,000 to TTU golf teams

Jeff Deitiker, president of the Rawls Men's Golf Association, surprised coaches from both the men's and women's golf teams with a donation that tripled the 2012 amount Wednesday, Dec. 11, when he presented checks totaling $35,000 for Texas Tech golf programs. From left are Jeff Jenkins, assistant men's coach; Chance Cain, volunteer assistant; Emily Kuhfeld, assistant women's coach; JoJo Robertson, women's head coach; and Deitiker. The contribution was triple the $11,000 given last year, in part because of the continuing and growing success of the Reagor-Dykes Jerry Rawls Partnership, major tournament of the Rawls Course at Texas Tech, Deitiker said.

New officers ready to kick off 2014 for RMGA
The Rawls Men's Golf Association capped its best financial year Nov. 21 with the election of officers and finalization of plans to make the largest contribution ever to the Texas Tech golf teams. The exact amount will be announced Dec. 11 when the group will present both the men's and women's coaches the largest checks by the RMGA since its inception in 2003.
New president Jeff Deitiker, stepping up from the role he played last year as vice-president, noted that Dusty Thomas, the outgoing RMGA leader, is staying on in a limited role as president pro tem.
"Dusty has been an officer and leader of RMGA since the course opened a decade ago, and he needs to take some time off. He's a big reason we have been able to arrive at this point, finishing the past year as one of the best in our history," Deitiker said.
With the RMGA now handling well over $100,000 in funds, Ron Hettler will continue as treasurer and he will add on new duties as vice-president.
The group appointed Rusty Riley as an independent auditor to audit books that RMGA will keep, and to make sure all is in compliance with federal tax laws.
To catch up on all the details of the past week's meeting, plus plans for 2014 that include the return of the "Dogfights," look under "Latest from RMGA" at this website.

Davenport shades Richardson for '13 RMGA cup
Wade Davenport had just enough at the finish to win the 2013 RMGA Cup over heart patient Red Richardson. Red had his 151 points several weeks ago, but then was knocked out of play when doctors discovered he needed a pacemaker. Behind 28 points at 123, Wade knew he had quite challenge left. Red's absence gave him the opening he needed. Davenport proceeded to win 17 points in two September brawls, then tack on 12 more in the Fall Brawl to reach 152 and nip Richardson at the wire by one point, 152-151. Dale Hayden was third at 121 and Jack Lusk and Jerry Smith tied for fourth at 120. For the rest of the top 20, CLICK HERE.

RMGA FALL BRAWL
Reed-Valigura take championship flight,
Brown-Kirk victors in president's flight
With 16 two-man teams in this year's Rawls Fall Brawl and a Saturday scramble separating the players into two flights, Gary Reed and Ross Valigura managed to win the championship flight by three Stableford points, edging out Rick Hancock and Brandon Ripley, 25-22. Reed-Valigura scored 8 above quota to maintain their lead of 17 points over quota on Saturday. Jeff Deitiker and Steve Long finished 21 over quota for third place. At 18 over quota in fourth place were Frank Morrison and Bill Turner.
After teams were flighted, golfers found it tougher going in Sunday's shamble, where partners play their own ball after choosing the best drive on each hole. Teams finished as many as 17 points above their quotas on Saturday, but the best any team could do in Sunday's shamble was 8 points above quota.
In the president's flight John Kirk and Jim Brown managed to win with 8 points above quota, based largely on Jim Brown's eagle at No. 7. The eagle itself was worth 8 points, meaning that team otherwise pretty much matched its quota. Their win was 20-14 over Tom Perry and Jack Lusk, who beat a pair of teams two more points back and tied for third, Steve Bewley-Jeff Lansdell and Joe Caldwell-Matt Hodges.

Reagor-Dykes Jerry Rawls Partnership attracts 80 teams in 8 flights for second year of event
The Reagor-Dykes Jerry Rawls Partnership at Texas Tech's Rawls Course has a full field in its second year, this time attracting 80 teams for Lubbock's final major tournament of the year. Defending champion Shawn Reeves, who paired with Michael White last year, is back to try to hold on to the title with a new partner, Brian Adams. Former Texas Tech golfer David Bolen, a 2013 major winner in Lubbock already, has teamed with Jason Staggs, several-time Rawls Course champion, to make another formidable team. Michael Pruitt and Scott Rundell will try to continue their winning ways of the past several years, so the stage is set for a battle royal at the course designed by Tom Doak and rated as one of top public courses in the state.
It also is continuously rated as one of the very best university courses in the nation.

Kearney to Tennessee, Louth is new Rawls pro
As you may know by now, Robbie Kearney has been promoted within the Troon Golf family
and has accepted the General Manager position at Five Oaks Country Club right outside Nashville, Tennessee. As this happened very quickly, we did not get a chance to let everyone know before his departure to Tennessee. We are planning on Robbie coming back sometime in the near future for a couple of days, so that we can have a little get together and will let you all know when that will be. I certainly want to thank Robbie for his commitment and leadership the last 4 years here at The Rawls Course. He was an integral part of our team and will be missed. We wish Robbie the very best in his new role within Troon Golf.
Now for the future of The Rawls Course, I am extremely excited and pleased to announce the promotion of Jason Louth to Head Golf Professional at The Rawls Course. Jason has been a great asset to our team since his return in January. His dedication, loyalty and knowledge of our operations have proven that he is the right choice to be our next Head Golf Professional. Jason’s leadership and commitment will help our operations at The Rawls Course continue to grow and improve. Please help me in congratulating and supporting Jason in his new role.

Early leaders in 2013 RMGA cup announced

Here's another 'fantastic foto' from John Weast
"She's a beauty, Number 9 at Rawls," says John Weast, photographer extraordinaire who's a member at the Rawls Course. Especially, John, after a stormy night, and an early morning shot the next day. You can bet that most of the time when high winds, heavy rain, a little hail, etc. hit this plains area at night, the next morning will be beautiful. It certainly turned out that way today, June 6, 2013.

The rest of the story......
And now, as Paul Harvey used to say, for the rest of the story……..
The Hettler Cup this year was even more competitive than anyone knew. A discrepancy on the final scoreboard, accidental, made the final score two shots closer. Instead of 28-22 as first reported, the final was Lakeridge 27, RMGA 23.
The confusion was in two similar names: Gary “Reed” and “Reid” Ellis. The score was recorded as a Reid victory, when it actually was a Reed win.
Gary Reed won his singles match over Reid Ellis, 5 & 4.
That changed Sunday’s final score from 17-13 to 16-14 favor of Lakeridge, making both days 2-point wins for that group.
“I can see where they could make that mistake,” Gary Reed said.
“I put both our full names on the scorecard.”
Gary added he knew the final result was still the same, even though the team score was two points closer.
“I worked hard for that win,” he added.
The Rawls Reporter has been corrected to reflect Gary’s win and the final tally. You can check it out under Latest from RMGA.

Sam Hansard makes a putt at 13 during Hettler Cup 2013
You can hit play and get the ball moving to see Sam Hansard make a crucial putt at Lakeridge No. 13 during play at the Hettler Cup 2013. His fellow Rawls golfer Rick Hancock looks on as the ball goes in the cup for a win during Sam's Sunday match.

RMGA awards $11,000 to TTU golf teams at USA

The Rawls Men's Golf Association recreated its check presentation to the Texas Tech University men's and women's golf teams in mid-January.
The checks totaling $11,000 were given in mid-December without the fanfare, $5,500 each to the men's and women's teams. So to make the public aware of the awards, large-sized duplicates were shown at the United Spirit Arena during halftime of the Kansas-Texas Tech Big 12 basketball game. From left in the photo are Jeff Deitiker, V-P, and Dusty Thomas, president, of the RMGA, along with JoJo Robertson, Lady Raider golf coach, and Greg Sands, Raider men's golf coach.

Jack Vanderburg qualifies for U.S. Junior Amateur
Jack Vanderburg, a member of the Frenship High School golf team which played in the Texas UIL state golf championships in Austin this past spring, has qualified for the United States Junior Amateur Championship which will be staged in New Hampshire in July.
Jack is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Vanderburg. The Vanderburgs
make Texas Tech's Rawls Course the family's home course.
The youngster will be a senior at Frenship next year and will be trying to reach the state golf championships one more time.
In about two weeks he will be playing at Lakewood Country Club,
competing in the Junior Byron Nelson tournament.

Rawls team facility-clubhouse opening Aug. 30
Ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Texas Tech team facility and clubhouse at The Rawls Course is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 30, about 10 days after The Jerry Rawls Partnership Aug. 17-19. Jerry Smith, spokesman for the Minnix Companies, the builder, said construction is on schedule for completion by the weekend of the partnership.
"We should be done in time for the partnership, if the weather holds," Smith said. "It's possible the restaurant could be moved in and ready to go by then, but everything would have to happen right on schedule."
About the only thing remaining to be completed at the time of the partnership will be the landscaping, Smith said.

Golfweek elevates Rawls Course to no. 2 in Texas
Honors for The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University in Lubbock just keep coming. On March 12, Golfweek Magazine elevated the course to the No. 2 golf course in the state of Texas.
"It could get even better next year," Greg Winter, general manager for Troon golf management, said Tuesday. "We have a great new clubhouse and Red Raider team facility on the way, and our maintenance crew led by Rodnie Bermea continues to do a wonderful job. We're anticipating a really great golf season this year."
Winter said the course was ranked fifth by the magazine a year ago. The only course ranked ahead of The Rawls is Pine Dunes Resort and Golf Club in Frankston in east central Texas.
Opened in 2003, The Rawls Course will gain later this year a $3.7 million clubhouse and team facility. The course also routinely hosts high school district and regional meets. It was named after Jerry S. Rawls, who donated a large part of the funding for the course.
Ranked 3 through 5 in Texas are the Barton Creek Canyons Course in Austin, Butterfield Trail in El Paso and The Old American Golf Club in The Colony.
Golf Digest magazine holds The Rawls Course in similar esteem. Of the 30 best courses in Texas, 25 are private. The five public courses in that group selected by the Digest, in order of their ranking, are Barton Creek Canyons, The Rawls Course, Texarkana Golf Club, Barton Creek Foothills and Horseshoe Bay.
